It was a spontaneous and heartfelt show of support and solidarity to the victims in Sri Lanka from a congregation of about two thousand people. The Chief Celebrant was Dr Anthony Fisher, Archbishop of Sydney and the mass was con-celebrated by other Bishops and Priests, including those of other Christian denominations.
The event was organised by the Archdiocese of Sydney and the Dean of the Cathedral Fr Don Richardson with support from the Sri Lankan Consulate General – Mr Lal Wickrematunge, and the Chaplain for Sri Lankan Catholic Community in Sydney – Fr Chaminda Wanigasena.
In his homily, Bishop Anthony Fisher, commended to Almighty God, the souls of the 253 or so people or so who died, many of whom were attending Easter Sunday mass. He also prayed for healing for the hundreds of survivors who were injured and traumatised, and for the consolation for the grieving, and interceded for peace and security for the Sri Lankan people of every Nation.
A candle light vigil was held after the mass in the Cathedral Courtyard.
