Over three hundred (300) members of the Sri Lankan Catholic community of all walks of life and of ethnicities –Sinhalese, Tamil and Burgher braved the chilly and windy weather to flock together to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven and the Feast of Our Lady of Madhu at the Mt Schoenstatt Shrine in Mulgoa, on Sunday.
Fr Chaminda Wanigasena, the Chaplain for the Sri Lankan Catholic Community in Sydney, celebrated the Holy Mass. In his homily Fr Chaminda emphasised the need for us to make a positive change in our spiritual lives as a result of celebrations such as this with the blessings and guidance from Our Lady of Madhu.
The Choirs sang in English, Sinhalese and Tamil adding value to the Liturgy. After the mass the beautifully decorated statue of Our Lady of Madhu was carried in procession on the shoulders young ladies finely dressed in blue sarees and young men nattily dressed in black and white and blue neck ties, while the choirs sang hymns of praise and devotion of Our Lady. The strong devotion to Our Lady among our community was evident and great to see.
Concluding prayers and the blessing of the statue took place at the Mt Schoenstatt Shrine, with choirs singing “Maratha Madhu Mathave” in both languages alternately in Tamil and Sinhalese.
A feeling of good will and joyful spirit prevailed in the fellowship that followed the service, with the sharing of food and drink contributed by all.
